Delicate Arch, re-processed, AGAIN!

April 24, 2009

Hey everybody,

Yet another from Moab, Utah in Arches National Park. Delicate Arch is quite the iconic image, but I’m happy because I feel like I got something a little different. I think this is the third or fourth time I processed this, but I’m happy with it now. Gotta love it when light peeks through dark storm clouds!

Canyonlands Dreamscape

April 21, 2009

From Canyonlands National Park this past December. I was lucky to find the Island in the Sky district like this; seeming as if it truly was an island in the sky! Bret and I had a heck of a time shooting for a few hours while these conditions stuck around.

On a different note… Spring is finally beginning to hit my home area and I can’t be more excited. I’m heading out this week for a few days of backpacking on the Appalachian Trail without the camera gear, and hope to hit it hard when I get back!

Bryce Canyon Sunset

March 26, 2009

Hey everybody,

Here’s yet another shot from my travels during this fall/winter. I had intended to get to Kodachrome Basin for this sunset, but I was running late. I decided I’d try my luck at Bryce Canyon, knowing that it was much better for sunrise shooting. I think I made out well for the relatively clear conditions. I really love the post-sunset “glow” that is always present in the Southwestern desert. I miss it!

Hoar frosted forest, Davis, West Virginia

March 24, 2009

I’m feeling a bit unsure about this one, and I’d like to hear any of your comments or critiques that you may have. I feel like I won’t get much help from critique forums on this one, since the thumbnail isn’t very flashy looking… If you click the link you can view it really large.

It’s snowing outside!

March 2, 2009

Well,

It’s supposed to snow 5-8 inches here tonight. I’m not sure how true that forecast is, but I’m excited to get out in the snow anyway. I don’t have a whole lot of interesting things to talk about this time. Just slaving away at the computer screen, processing photos. I love it! Due to accidentally getting some toothpaste in my eye, I’m taking a break to write this entry!

Here’s a shot from Arches NP back in December. I posted it on here before, but here is the properly processed version.

More of the Great Gray Owl

February 23, 2009

Hey everybody,

Here’s another one of the Great Gray Owl I photographed in Ottawa. Once it landed on it’s prey, it would sit there for a few minutes, and would allow us to get pretty close. Before re-positioning myself to shoot the bird taking off back to it’s perch, I would try to capture a few static shots. For this particular shot, I laid down on my stomach for a super-low angle in order to show the falling snow against the darker background.

Anyway… Here’s my quick story. My super-warm leather and fur mad bomber hat was getting in the way a bit while trying to get flight shots of the owl. I casually tossed it a few feet behind me, and the owl instantly swooped down, snatched it, and flew off to the woods. He didn’t come out for the next fifteen or twenty minutes. Who knows what he did with my hat. Anyway, this image should give you an idea for what I saw as I bid farewell to my hat.

Great Gray Owl flying in snow

February 21, 2009

Hey everybody,

Sorry for the lack of recent updates. We’ve been really busy between the birds and driving. Amherst Island was a bit of a bust, but we’ve had great luck around Ottawa and Algonquin Provincial Park. I have tons to share over the next few days, but here’s a shot of a Great Gray Owl in the snow. I now love shooting birds in flight when it’s snowing. Also, I have an interesting story about this owl which I will share with you all in my next post.
